Whakatane is home to one of the biggest Tuna fishing tournaments in New Zealand. Running for over 16 years, the tournament is a highlight of the national sport fishing calendar and attracts up to 600 anglers from all over New Zealand.

The main species found in New Zealand waters are the albacore, southern bluefin and skipjack tuna. Other less common tuna found off New Zealand’s shores include the yellowfin, and bigeye.
